Pebble Paintings: Art out in the open

Throughout the Festival.

John Darley SLm, an established artist of miniatures, has created a set of acrylic based paintings on specially purchased pebbles which reflect the culture, heritage and variety of the Kent coastal area.

During the summer - and commencing with the Whitstable Oyster Festival - John will be placing a number of his painted pebbles on beaches in and around the Whitstable, Tankerton and Herne Bay areas. Anyone fortunate enough to find one of these original works of art will be able to keep it.

Photographic clues as to their approximate position will be posted in the appropriate locality. John’s intention is for people to make the connection between art and the environment. In a landscape which is both manmade and natural it offers the opportunity for exploration beyond the search for pebbles, towards the discovery of the aesthetic qualities and diversity that this unique region has to show us. Through this simple interaction “en plein air” we increase our awareness, understanding and enjoyment of life’s bigger picture, a picture in which everyone and everything has a place.
